Loop vs Full Line Run

Knowing whether your home has a pre-plumbed water softener loop — or needs a full line run from the main — affects installation cost and timing. Here's how to tell the difference.

Do I have a loop?

A "Loop" is a pre-plumbed option that may have been installed when your home was built, or it is the location where your current water softener is installed if you're replacing it.

  • Typically located near the water heater
  • Includes a drain line and electric outlet nearby
  • Enables quick installation of water softening systems

Typical installation cost

$250 typical loop install.

Custom Plumbing Required

Full line installation

If you do not have a loop for the water softener, it will be necessary to connect to the main water line where it enters your home, and run plumbing lines to the desired or available location for the water system.

Factors that affect installation

  • Main water line location
  • Attic access availability
  • Single or two-story home configuration
  • Walkways and other obstructions

Typical installation cost

$800 – $3,500 depending on difficulty, materials and labor expenses.
